BODY BUILDING
HOW TO SUCCEED

Body Building

Types

In order to become a professional bodybuilder, a contestant would develop as an amateur by competing in the required number of competitions of the right standard that would, eventually, qualify him for professional status from the IFBB, the sport’s governing body.

Progression as a professional is through further qualifying competitions in which the competitor earns the right to be able to compete in major competitions, such as the Night of Champions. The ultimate accolade remains, as it has always been, in winning the title of Mr Olympia and the associated bronze statue.

There is another branch of bodybuilding that is focused primarily on the concept of competitions based on a healthy lifestyle rather than the popular impression of pure commercialism. This version is called Natural Bodybuilding. In this environment, the rules pertaining to banned substances are strictly adhered to, and contestants flouting these rules are duly excluded from all further competitions.

During the 1970’s, the sport rose to new heights of glamour and desirability due, in part, to the presence of one man - Arnold Schwarzenegger.

It was around this time that women began to take up bodybuilding with competitions becoming very popular. By the use and application of weights, this form of bodybuilding is known as strength training and is ideal for women. The main benefits are an increase in bone mass, the prevention of bone loss together with an increase in muscle strength and overall balance.

A further variant is the concept of competitions for women based on fitness and their figure. This type of display has become very popular with women who do not want to develop the muscular aspects associated more with the involvement by men.

The participation of women in the sport reached a pinnacle in 1980 with the introduction of the first Ms Olympia competition, based on the fitness and figure concept.
